I left Roanoke in 1979 and resumed my newspaper career as a general assignment reporter the following year at The Star-Ledger in Newark, NJ, one of the country’s largest daily papers at the time. My primary areas of coverage included the courts and criminal justice matters, New Jersey organized crime and the Meadowlands sports complex. I also wrote some lengthy music pieces, mostly retrospectives with a connection to Newark. In 2007, I won an ASCAP/Deems Taylor Award, a national award given for excellence in music writing. The awards ceremony was held at New York’s Lincoln Center. I remained at the Ledger until my retirement in 2009.
